The band has played dusty battlefields

 glorious ballrooms.

"We do a lot of research to find our songs," John Robison once told Richmond's Style Weekly. "We do it accurately. For example, that's why we don't use a mandolin. It wasn't used in the songs originally."

Individually, they've played in symphonies and sacred chorals, bluegrass jams, folk groups and Celtic fests. They've also played together for over a dozen years.

John's musical career began in the folk boom of the 1960's in the coffeehouses in and around Washington, D.C. He is experienced as a solo performer and with folk, Celtic, country, blue grass groups, and old-time string bands.  He also periodically acts as a Victorian Period dance instructor.

Su Tarr

Vocals and violin
Su is a classically trained violinist and has performed with the Richmond, Virginia, and Charleston, West Virginia, and Huntington, West Virginia symphonies. She has also performed with the Busch Gardens Country Show and is a balladeer for Colonial Williamsburg.  She is experienced with folk, Celtic, blue grass, country, jazz, and old-time string band music.

Lynn Trott

Vocals, guitar, bodhran, and dance mistress 
Lynn is a classically trained lyric soprano. She studied at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria, and taken private instruction in oboe and Viola da Gamba. She has been a balladeer for Colonial Williamsburg since the mid 1980's and performed with renaissance consorts, celtic groups, and with the Runaway String Band www.runawaystringband.com.

Roger Reynolds

Vocals and guitar
Roger is a versatile vocalist, composer, arranger, leader, and teacher. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from U. Miami in Studio Music and Jazz Voice Performance.  Roger is teaching at Randolph- Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.  His extensive credits and bio can be viewed at www.uptownvocaljazzquartet.com.

Receive Jefferson Davis Medals

     Southern Horizon performed for the Children of the Confederacy's Annual General Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia, on July 12, 2002.  In a short ceremony at the conclusion of their performance, each band member was presented with the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal in recognition of their efforts to preserve the rich musical heritage and traditions of the Old South through their many concert and dance appearances.

 

 

 

Media Accomplishments

 

     The individual members of Southern Horizon have appeared in many period films and advertising media. They have provided background music for "ENLIST!," a video guide for re-enactors by Meadows Video Productions. Their music was also used in "The Battle of Slash Church," a video filmed at Meadow Farm Museum in 1999 produced for Henrico County Virginia Schools.

 

     Current projects include an educational CD for the education department of the Museum of the Confederacy and music for a DVD, "Views of the National Parks," being produced by the Petersburg National Battlefield Park. They may be going Hollywood, too,  with a major film project, "The War Within" movie.
